Briones Now A Flower As New Gumamela Hybrid Named After Her

GUMAMELA FLOWER – A new hybrid Gumamela flower was named after Education Chief Leonor Magtolis Briones.

Recently, the University of the Philippines-Los Baños Women in Public Service named the new type of “Hibiscus rosa-Sinensis” or “Gumamela” as “Leonor M. Briones”.

According to the UP members, this act was due to Briones’ huge contributions to their society. Furthermore, the newly named flower was awarded to her this Saturday.

According to an article from Inquirer, Briones said:

“I am humbled and deeply honored to have a wonderful variant of Gumamela named after me

Briones said that she isn’t only an advocate for education but also for nature. As such, she said that she appreciates the gesture. “I appreciate UPLB’s Women in Public Service series that recognizes outstanding Filipino women in government“, she added.

As per the article, Briones was nominated by Dr. Glenn Gregorio, Director of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in the field of agriculture. Furthermore, Briones’ nomination was also endorsed by the UPLB Screening Committee.

The 81-year-old education secretary has spent much of her life as a teacher, instructing young children in religious schools as well as undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students.

She was named a Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines – National College of Public Administration and Governance in recognition of her achievements.

In view of Filipino students’ declining performance in several foreign examinations, the incumbent education secretary also spearheaded the Sulong EduKalidad campaign.

It was also under Briones’ tenure that the groundbreaking blended remote learning program was introduced in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
