Handover Ceremony of Scholarship Grants to 14 DAAD-SEARCA Scholars

Makati City - Fourteen Southeast Asian nationals received the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship grants through SEARCA to pursue their graduate studies at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) for academic year 2016/2017. The DAAD Handover Ceremony was held on 21 November 2016 at the German Club, Makati City. The Ambassador-designate, Dr. Gordon Kricke, handed over the grants during the ceremony. The Ambassador was very pleased to hear the research plans of the grantees, as these were deemed to contribute to the development of their respective countries.

The 14 DAAD-SEARCA scholars enrolled at UPLB this year are:

  • Mr. Win Htein, Myanmar, PhD Environmental Science
  • Mr. Saw Hto Lwe Htoo, Myanmar, PhD Horticulture
  • Mr. Soe Khaing, Myanmar, PhD Agricultural Economics
  • Ms. Alisa Sahahirun, Thailand, PhD Extension Education
  • Ms. Vu Thi Hai, Vietnam, MS Agricultural Economics
  • Ms. Do Thi Thanh Huyen, Vietnam, PhD Agricultural Economics

Also present during the event were Mrs. Katharina McGrath, DAAD representative in Manila and Lecturer at UP Diliman, Mr. Thorsten Werner Gottfried, First Secretary for Cultural Affairs of the German Embassy, and Ms. Zacyl R. Jalotjot, representative of the Graduate Education and Institutional Development Department (GEIDD) of SEARCA.

Likewise, a DAAD handover ceremony was conducted in Thailand with a Myanmar DAAD-SEARCA grantee, who is taking up PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics at Kasetsart University.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is one of SEARCA’s partners in its human resource development program since 1975, with more than 350 DAAD-SEARCA scholarship grants awarded, 92% of which have been completed successfully. (Zacyl R. Jalotjot)
