The influence of Some Morphological Leaf characters and Photosynthesis Efficiency on Yield of Rice.

(Thailand), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

Two varities and seven new selection of rice were grown in 1971 dry season to determine how flag leaf characters and photosynthetic efficiency contribute to gain yield and dry-matter production. Characters studied included angle, length, width, area, thickness and photosynthetic and respiration rates of flag leaves.

Result showed that grain yield was closely related to flag leaf width and leaf are index at the flowering stage. Flag leaf angle and area were also positively associated with grain yield, through not significantly. No relationship was found between gain yield and flag leaf length and thickness, and between dry-matter production and all leaf characters studied.

Photosynthetic rate had close correlation with thickness, none with grain yield, and inverse relationship with dry-matter productions.

The finding suggest that leaf area index at the flowering stage and flag leaf width are the most important indicators of grain yield, and that leaf thickness may be used as an index of photosynthetic rates.
