The Use of Auxiliary Information in Philippine Agricultural Statistics

(Malaysia), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

The study was primarily designed to contruct a workable frame for future surveys with a small sample size and a simple estiimate, based on unreleased agricultural data on Laguna from the 1971 Census of Agriculture.

Seven estimators were developed and their variances derived, but only three were selected for comparison. The frame was found efficient as applied to farm households and their realted variables. It was also acceptable for non-farm households and two realted variables, but could still stand improvement in these cases.

Separate ratio estimate appeared more efficient than combined estimate which, in turn, was generally better than stratified estimate. COmbined estimate, however, tended to be less biased, hence more recommendable, especially for small sample size.

The multipurpose layout was considered adaptable to any agricultural survey, with some modifications or further substratification.
