Nagoya University-SEARCA Joint PhD Research Scholarship in Agriculture

The Nagoya University-SEARCA Joint PhD Research Scholarship in Agriculture is offered to Filipinos and Cambodians who wish to pursue their PhD degree at the NU Satellite Campus based at the Graduate School of UPLB, and at the NU Satellite Campus for Bio-agricultural Sciences based at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Phnom Penh.

There will be a total of four (4) Cambodian scholars and eight (8) Filipino NU-SEARCA PhD Research Scholars under the project. The PhD by Research Program combines lectures, seminars, and student advising/guidance in English via TV conference system. Major academic advisers are Japanese professors, while members of the guidance committee include Cambodian, Filipino, and other invited foreign professors. The academic advisers regularly visit the project sites of the scholars in Cambodia and in the Philippines. Upon completion of degree requirements, NU confers the degree of Doctor of Agriculture or Doctor of International Development, as the case may be, to the concerned NU-SEARCA scholar.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

For Cambodian Applicants:

  • Candidates must be from the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF); and
  • Preferably mid- and senior-level executives who are engaged in framing policies; researchers or technical staff directly or indirectly involved in activities related to agriculture and veterinary science; and who are occupying supervisory and managerial positions in MAFF.

For Filipino Applicants:

  • Candidates from various government agencies and government-supported higher education institutions in the Philippines; and
  • Preferably mid- and senior-level executives engaged in framing policies; and managers, supervisors, researchers or technical staff directly or indirectly involved in activities related to agriculture and international development programs in the Philippines.

Recruitment and Selection of Scholars

For Cambodian Applicants:

  1. Candidates for scholarship will be jointly recruited by NU and SEARCA from among mid- and senior-level executives of MAFF holding permanent positions.
  2. There will be two (2) schedules of interview either via Skype, or face-to-face; the first by SEARCA and the final interview by NU. SEARCA will submit its interview results and recommendations to NU.
  3. The NU and SEARCA Committees will meet via Skype to deliberate on the results.
  4. Final selection will be agreed upon by NU and SEARCA.

For Filipino Applicants:

  1. Candidates for scholarship will be recruited by NU and SEARCA.
  2. There will be two separate schedules of interview via Skype by SEARCA and NU.
  3. An approved admission to the chosen degree program at any of the two graduate schools and passing the final interview by the NU Committee will be the bases for final selection of scholars.

Project Duration

With ongoing scholars for the joint PhD research scholarship, Nagoya University and SEARCA are discussing the future of the partnership beyond AY 2019-2020.
