A Comparison of Two Types of Extension Workers in Thailand According to Certain Aspects of Their Job

(Brunei Darussalam), Doctor of Philosophy (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Dissertation Abstract:

The study aimed mainly to determine some factors related to certain job aspects and the differences between non-degree and degree holders regarding such aspects.

A mailed questionnaire was used in gathering data from 330 non-degreed and 120 degreed extension workers. Chi-square test and correlation coefficient were employed for data analysis.

Findings indicated that, compared with degree holders, non-degree holders were all male, older, longer in the service and more of them married. They also had more direct contact with farmers but had lower pay and less chances for short-term training abroad.

Non-degree holders scored higher in motivation to work, need satisfaction and positive attitude toward extension clientele, but the differences were not statistically significant.

Both degree and non-degree holders had problems in communicating with farmers, and both shared in sources of incentives. A significantly positive relationship was found between the nature of their job and their attitude toward extension.

No relationship was noted between work motivation and job satisfaction; between achievement motivation and such respondents’ characteristics as age, salary, and priority choice of extension work as an occupation; and between these characteristics and such variables as work  motivation, need satisfaction, job satisfaction, attitude toward extension clientele and communication problems with farmers.
