Marketable Surplus Analysis of Rice in Irrigated Peatland Area, South Kalimantan, Indonesia

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Agricultural Economics (Gadjah Mada University)

Abstract:

Riam Kanan irrigation in South Kalimantan was constructed to improve the productivity of the existing rice farming operations and to speed up the activities of the development in other sectors on a high priority. The most real impact expected from the irrigation construction was the increase in the cropping intensity and land productivity—that total production and volume of the sale can be increased, and the prosperity of the farmer households can in turn be improved.

The objectives of the study were to (1) investigate the marketing system of rice using the approaches of behavior structure and market performance, and (2) find out the factors influencing the volume of the rice sale at the farming operation level. Primary data were collected in the rice cultivating season of 1998/1999 from 153 respondents using purposive sampling method. The results of the study showed the following:

1. Based on the structure-conduct-performance, the marketing system of the rice in the irrigation area of Riam Kanan was not efficient because of the relative high marketing margin and only the small share of it can be reached by the farmers and the middlemen.

2. The pattern of the rice farming operation using high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds was more commercial than that of the local variety; however, the farmers could not cultivate HYV all year long because of some obstacles such as unfavorable season, rise and fall of tides, plant diseases, and farmers’ preference.

3. The volume of rice sale at the rice farming operations was influenced by the number of production, rice stock, transporting distance to the market, and variety of rice.
