A Mathematical Programming Approach to the Management of an Industrial Teak Forest

(Thailand), Doctor of Philosophy in Forest Resources Management (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Dissertation Abstract:

A conceptual framework for regulating Thailand's teak forests and covering the entire forest regulation system was  developed. The framework involved conceptualization of forest regulation and development of a methodology for solving this problem. The framework used a linear programming model with four variations that simultaneously considered the functional relationships of the components of the forest regulation system.

The linear programming model consisted of various management strategies as decision variables and covered 64 cutting units of natural forests and 59 cutting units of existing plantation forests, with 10 five-year planning periods over a 50-year planning horizon. Multiple rotations taken at the same time were 25, 30, and 35 years, while the single rotations were 25, 30, and 35 years taken individually.
