Biotechnology key to unlocking healthier, more sustainable future

THE Philippines is on the cusp of a biotechnological revolution, with the potential to transform the country's agriculture, food security, and public health. A recent forum in Manila brought together scientists, regulators, and media professionals to discuss the latest advances in biotechnology and its applications in the country.

The event, organized by Science Communicators Philippines (SciCommPH), CropLife Philippines, and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture on October 14, 2025, highlighted the vital role of biotechnology in addressing the country's pressing challenges.

Dr. Ruby Roan Cristobal, President of SciCommPH, emphasized that biotechnology is crucial for food security, public health, and climate resilience.

The forum showcased several breakthroughs in biotechnology, including Malusog (Golden) Rice: A biofortified rice variety that aims to combat malnutrition and boost resilience; Bt Eggplant: A genetically modified eggplant that resists the eggplant fruit and shoot borer, offering farmers a safe and effective alternative to chemical control; Bt Corn: A genetically modified corn that has shown promising results in increasing yields and reducing pesticide use; and Gene-Edited Crops: A new generation of crops that are being developed using gene editing technologies, which offer improved yields, disease resistance, and climate tolerance.

These innovations have the potential to transform Philippine agriculture, improving the livelihoods of farmers and the health of consumers.

Despite the promise of biotechnology, there are challenges to its adoption, including misinformation, uneven policy awareness, and regulatory hurdles. The forum emphasized the need for science communication, multi-sectoral collaboration, and inclusive policies to support the development and deployment of biotechnology innovations.

The forum highlighted the importance of empowering farmers and consumers with access to biotechnology innovations. By doing so, we can promote sustainable agriculture, improve food security, and enhance public health.

The forum concluded with a call to action, urging stakeholders to work together to promote biotechnology and its applications in the Philippines.

It also called for intensified science communication and multi-sectoral collaboration to ensure the continued benefits of agricultural innovation for Filipino farmers and consumers.

As Ramon Abadilla, Executive Director of CropLife Philippines, said, "We must tell the biotechnology story—one of inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability—and move it forward for the nation's farmers."

“By working together, we can unlock the full potential of biotechnology and create a healthier, more sustainable future for the Philippines,” Abadilla said.
