THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) has inked a deal with four partner institutions in Inopacan, Leyte to encourage inclusive growth and environmental sustainability in agriculture and rural development.

The memorandum of agreement (MoA) by the Center, Visayas State University, Visayas Consortium for Agriculture and Aquatic Resources Program, and the local government of Inopacan, Leyte was signed yesterday, according to a statement released by the SEARCA.

Covered by the MoA is the project, “Piloting ISARD Models: Strengthening Linkages among Farmers, Government and Industry Sectors for Inclusive and Sustainable Rural Development in Inopacan, Leyte,” to be jointly implemented by the four partner institutions

“The ridge-to-reef and ecosystems-based approaches to participatory project planning and management were used in conceptualizing, designing and developing the project,” added the statement.

The ridge-to-reef approach aims to reverse degradation of coastal resources to minimize the damage to coastal ecosystems and waters.

The project’s aims include attaining food sufficiency and reducing poverty incidence within the municipality.

“This can be achieved through increased linkage of the agriculture sector with other stakeholders and markets, and enhanced capability of agricultural workers,” read the statement.
