As the academic year in most Southeast Asian universities come to a close, 39 SEARCA graduate scholars are among those who have completed their graduate study program and march on with another feather in their cap.

Among the 39 scholars, Ms. Maria Anabelle Gerona who graduated with a PhD in Development Communications at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) received the Most Outstanding PhD Candidate, Class of 2015. During the UPLB Graduate School Hooding and Recognition Ceremonies on 3 July 2015, Ms. Gerona also received the university’s Academic Excellence Award. Aside from Ms. Gerona, other SEARCA scholars have also been recognized for their outstanding academic achievements during the recognition rites. Ms. Maria Theresa Sawit was the College of Public Affairs and Development’s Academic Awardee for the Master’s level; while Mr. Kolakanh Chanthavongsa was awarded best MS thesis for his research titled “Household And Community Level Practices Toward Native Rice Sufficiency In Khoune District, Xiengkhouang Province, Lao PDR.”Together with these graduates are 22 other SEARCA scholars who were conferred their degrees during the UPLB commencement exercises on 4 July 2015.

The new SEARCA graduate alumni will be coming from other ASEAN universities, namely, Chiang Mai University (CMU, 3), Khon Kaen University (KKU, 2) and Kasetsart University (KU, 3) from Thailand, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB, 3) from Indonesia, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM, 2), UP School of Economics in Diliman (UPSE, 1), and Tokyo University of Agriculture (Tokyo NODAI, 1).

Among the graduates, 14 finished their Master’s degree through the IDRC supported Uplands Fellowship Project, while 6 were supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
