SEARCA Scholars stand out in UPLB English Program

LOS BAÑOS, Philippines – Two new SEARCA scholars studying at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) stood out for their excellent English communication skills during the closing program of the University’s Intensive English Course for International Graduate Students held on 1 December 2014 at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), UPLB.

Mr. Zaw Zaw Htet and Ms. Su Latt Phyu both from Myanmar, were awarded “Best in Grammar and Academic Writing”, and “Best in Reading and Overall Topnotcher”, respectively. The recognitions were conferred by Dr. Felino P. Lansigan, CAS Dean, and Dr. Marish Madlangbayan, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development who represented the UPLB Chancellor, Dr. Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr., and Dr. Willie P. Abasolo, Graduate School College Secretary.

Ms. Su Latt Phyu is a demonstrator at the Yezin Agricultural University. On the other hand, Mr. Zaw Zaw Htet is a Staff Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Both are based in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

I am very thankful to SEARCA for giving me a chance to study in UPLB and support my enrollment in the LITE Program,” said Phyu who is taking up PhD in Plant Breeding.

In my country, I am also a teacher and I know that a teacher can only be as effective as his/her students. So I make sure to participate in class and complete my exercises, assignments and tasks.”

I also share this with my classmates, because we learn from each other, we are like family,” Phyu added.

Out of the 25 graduate students who have enrolled in UPLB’s English training course, 17 were SEARCA scholars from Lao PDR (6), Myanmar (5), Thailand (2) and Timor Leste (4). These 17 new scholars are part of the 45 SEARCA scholars who came in first semester of AY 2014-2015.
