As a new member of the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN), SEARCA participated in a Webinar on social media for forestry practitioners. In the context of the activities of the ASEAN-Swiss Partnership on Social Forestry and Climate Change (ASFCC) for the ASFN Focal Points and ASFCC Partners, the ASFN Secretariat and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) organized the Webinar that is running in three consecutive sessions of two hours each, on March 24, 25, and 28, 2014.

A Webinar is an online seminar, where all participants and the trainer are gathered in a virtual classroom. They communicate online via audio and video. Each participant can watch the presentations, listen to the course, and participate interactively, with questions or remarks. It is a novel way of bringing training concept to reality, while avoiding the costs of traveling.

The ASFN Webinar covers an overview of all available tools or the "Social Media Plethora" in the first two sessions, and then will look at some specific issues, questions, and suggestions that may come up on the use of social media within one’s work environment in the last session. The overall goal of the Webinar is to optimize the use of Social Media in promoting the activities of ASFN, ASFCC, and its partners.

The Webinar was facilitated by Mr. Peter Casier and Mr. Samuel Stacey, both online media consultants, who have worked with CIFOR and other larger forestry and agriculture research field for several years.

Also joining the Webinar are partners from the ASFN Secretariat, Indonesia; Non-timber Forest Product Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP), Philippines; Royal Forestry Department, Thailand; CIFOR, Indonesia; The Center for People and Forests (RECOFTC), Thailand; Forest Research Institute, Myanmar; and the ASFN Regional Focal Points of Malaysia, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. SEARCA participants from RDD and KMD are led by Dr. Mariliza V. Ticsay, Unit Head of Knowledge Resources-Knowledge Management Department.

A connectivity test was done on 21 March 2014 to ensure the readiness of the participants.
