SEARCA, DA-BAR Native Chicken Project conduct Project Review Meeting and Farmer Cooperators’ Day Tour

LAGUNA AND QUEZON, Philippines – The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), in partnership with the Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology (MOSCAT) and Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) held a Project Review Meeting on 15 October 2015 at SEARCA, College, Los Baños, Laguna. This activity is part of the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR)-funded project titled Production of Organic Feeds for Native Chicken: A Pilot Corn/Sorghum + Cowpea Intercropping Scheme Integrated with Village Feed Milling and Native Chicken Production.

The Project Review Meeting was attended by the Study Team and Sub-Team members from SEARCA, MOSCAT, and MMSU. The Sub-Team from MOSCAT was headed by President Rosalito Quirino while Ms. Diana Pastor, Poultry Breeder, led the Sub-Team from MMSU. Ms. Evelyn Juanillo, Executive Assistant II of DA-BAR, was also present in the meeting. The project activities implemented by MOSCAT in Claveria, Misamis Oriental and MMSU in Batac, Ilocos Norte were presented and discussed. The meeting also covered planning for the accomplishment of the remaining project activities. The project is expected to end by June 2016.

A Farmer Cooperators’ Day Tour was held on 16 October 2015 at the National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center (NSPRDC) in Tiaong, Quezon. Six farmer cooperators from Claveria, Misamis Oriental and Batac, Ilocos Norte joined the day tour. The Study Team and sub-teams from SEARCA, MOSCAT, and MMSU was also present to accompany their cooperators. The objective of the day tour is to expose the cooperators and the sub-teams from MOSCAT and MMSU to the different ways of managing organic farms and native chicken production to equip them with necessary skills to manage their farms in implementing the project activities.
