Leveling-Up Philippine Higher Education Institutions in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Resources (LevelUPHEI AFAR) Virtual Training Programs

The LevelUPHEI AFAR project of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), in collaboration with the Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC), is funded by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

It aims to level up Philippine higher education institutions in agriculture, fisheries, and natural resources (AFNR) towards enhanced relevance and competitiveness in the 21st century. The project includes mentoring and nurturing members of the State Universities and Colleges Association of Colleges of Agriculture in the Philippines, Inc. (SUC ACAP) and improve their standings in the world university rankings.

SUC-ACAP members, through the LevelUPHEI AFAR project, may participate in the Short-term Training Programs and Learning Events listed below (online offerings). All events under this project are by invitation only.

  • Learning event on Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions (LDP-HEIs) in the Philippines

    4 October to 29 November 2021

    Learning event on Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions (LDP-HEIs) in the PhilippinesThe program aims to raise the standard of Philippine HEIs and drive them towards enhanced relevance and competitiveness in the 21st century. It intends to engage participants in building their leadership and management capacities within the context of global challenges for needed better outcomes with respect to stronger academe-industry-government connectivity and curricular innovations that are in step with current needs and challenges of HEIs. It focuses on four key areas: Leadership, Graduate Preparedness, Technology, and Faculty Readiness to take on board new challenges. Each of these areas will require new visions, strategies, goals, and policies for leaders to take to their faculty and other staff and re-orientate them to higher levels of outcomes. This event will be co-organized and implemented with The HEAD Foundation (THF) in Singapore.

    Selection Criteria

    1. Administrators, middle and senior managers, and academic leaders of SUC-ACAP member institutions who are at least master's degree holders, are newly appointed leaders, or are poised for leadership positions in the near future, and spend half of their time in administrative/managerial work;
    2. With regular full-time appointment on active status (not on leave), as certified by the Director of Human Resource and Development of the sending institution and likely to continue serving in the institution for two more years or longer;
    3. Clearly expressed willingness to participate actively in the full training program, including commitment support from direct superior;
    4. Proficiency in spoken and written English (all sessions will be conducted in English);
    5. Endorsed by the University President; and
    6. Has a prepared draft Re-entry Action Plan (REAP).
  • Learning event on developing communication skills for HEIs in the Philippines

    1 February to 14 March 2022

    Learning event on developing communication skills for HEIs in the PhilippinesThis learning event aims for the participants to be able to articulate the role of public communication in higher education in the Philippines, describe the concept and elements of public communication, develop a public communication plan for their respective institutions, and learn essential skills in public communication.

    Selection Criteria

    1. HEI leaders of SUC-ACAP member institutions and their senior or mid-level staff whose responsibilities include or will include implementing public communication in their respective units/organizations;
    2. With regular full-time appointment on active status (not on leave), as certified by the Director of Human Resource and Development of the sending institution and likely to continue serving in the institution for two more years or longer;
    3. Clearly expressed willingness to participate actively in the full training program, including commitment support from direct superior;
    4. Proficiency in spoken and written English (all sessions will be conducted in English);
    5. Endorsed by the University President; and
    6. Has a prepared draft Re-entry Action Plan (REAP).
  • Learning event on data analysis and experimental designs

    14 February to 11 March 2022

    Learning event on data analysis and experimental designsThis training discusses the design techniques for experiments, the use of survey questionnaires, methods of probability sampling for surveys, statistical analysis, and the use of infographics in data presentations. It also includes workshops where participants can apply the lessons in exercises as well as in field work at an experimental station.

    Selection Criteria

    1. Junior faculty members or researchers of SUC-ACAP member institutions with demonstrated ability to conduct independent research (with complete data to work with) and has general understanding of statistical methods and experienced in using statistical computer packages;
    2. With regular full-time appointment on active status (not on leave), as certified by the Director of Human Resource and Development of the sending institution and likely to continue serving in the institution for two more years or longer;
    3. Clearly expressed willingness to participate actively in the full training program, including commitment support from direct superior;
    4. Proficiency in spoken and written English (all sessions will be conducted in English);
    5. Endorsed by the University President; and
    6. Has a prepared draft Re-entry Action Plan (REAP).
  • Learning event on developing fundable research project proposals

    18-29 April 2022

    Learning event on developing fundable research project proposalsThis learning event aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the participants in planning, designing, and packaging fundable project proposals. Using adaptive cycle management, it will focus on three major phases of project development and management, namely: (1) development; (2) planning, designing, and proposal packaging; and (3) results-based project management of fundable research projects.

    Selection Criteria

    1. Junior faculty members or researchers of SUC-ACAP member institutions with sufficient relevant experience and knowledge to understand training content and benefit from the training as much as possible;
    2. With regular full-time appointment on active status (not on leave), as certified by the Director of Human Resource and Development of the sending institution and likely to continue serving in the institution for two more years or longer;
    3. Clearly expressed willingness to participate actively in the full training program, including commitment support from direct superior;
    4. Proficiency in spoken and written English (all sessions will be conducted in English);
    5. Endorsed by the University President; and
    6. Has a prepared draft Re-entry Action Plan (REAP).
  • Learning event on scientific writing for publication and presentation skills

    19 April to 17 May 2022

    Learning event on scientific writing for publication and presentation skillsThis training aims to develop participants' skills in disseminating their research through publications and oral presentations.

    Selection Criteria

    1. Junior faculty members or researchers of SUC-ACAP member institutions with demonstrated ability to conduct independent research (with complete data set to work for publishable paper);
    2. With regular full-time appointment on active status (not on leave), as certified by the Director of Human Resource and Development of the sending institution and likely to continue serving in the institution for two more years or longer;
    3. Clearly expressed willingness to participate actively in the full training program, including commitment support from direct superior;
    4. Proficiency in spoken and written English (all sessions will be conducted in English);
    5. Endorsed by the University President; and
    6. Has a prepared draft Re-entry Action Plan (REAP).
