Up to 25 research scholarships for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are available starting 15 April 2010 at the Food Security Center (FSC) based at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. The scholarships are of three categories, namely: 1) PhD Sandwich Scholarships (6-month duration); 2) Research Scholarships for Visiting Postdoctoral Researchers (4-month duration); and 3) Excellence Scholarships for the FSC-supported "Young Excellence School" PhD Program (36-month duration).
For the PhD Sandwich and Research Scholarships (Category 1 and 2), the FSC will support researchers from developing countries to conduct their researches at the University of Hohenheim (South-North arrangement) or at a national or international research institute in a developing country (South-South arrangement). A few scholarships are available for students and postdoctoral researchers at the University of Hohenheim to visit a research institute in a developing country (North-South). Deadline for submission of application is 30 January 2010 and decision on the applications will be communicated to the applicants on 15 March 2010. The FSC will only evaluate complete applications.
Meanwhile, the Young Excellence School PhD scholarships are only available to excellent PhD students mostly from developing countries and a few from Germany. This PhD program commences in August 2010. Information on how to apply and the requirements will be available by end of January 2010.

The FSC is a newly established center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. It is one of the five excellence centers of the program “Exceed- Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation,” supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as national and international development and research organizations.
