Dr. Maria Cristeta N. Cuaresma took over the reins of SEARCA’s Graduate Scholarship Program effective 15 January 2014, on seconded appointment from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). As head, Dr. Cuaresma serves as SEARCA’s Coordinator for the Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC) and Upland Agriculture Fellowships Project Leader, among other activities under the Center’s Graduate Scholarship Program.
Dr. Cuaresma is no stranger to the SEARCA as she served as the Consortium Coordinator of UPLB for six years, from 2005 to 2012, in her capacity as the Graduate School College Secretary (2005-2011) and as the Vice Chancellor for Administration (2011-2012).
Aside from the aforementioned positions, Dr. Cuaresma also held other administrative positions in the University including Chief, UPLB Staff Housing Office, Assistant to the UPLB Chancellor for Academic Matters, and Head, Mathematics Division. During her stint at the Graduate School, she also served as UPLB Coordinator for the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Scholarship program under DOST, as well as for the Science and Engineering Graduate Scholarship program under CHED.
She is also an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, College of Arts and Sciences. As an academician, Dr. Cuaresma taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Math and Applied Mathematics (AMAT), including the General Education courses in Quantitative Reasoning, and Problem Solving. She also served as Adviser in the Special Problem of MATH and AMAT majors, and supervised Actuarial Science majors in their Practicum. She also completed several research projects in the field of algebraic combinatorics and served as trainor for a number of teacher training programs for math educators.
Dr. Cuaresma took her BS, MS and PhD in Mathematics at the University of the Philippines Diliman; with her PhD dissertation completed at the University of Western Australia in 2004 under a sandwich program scheme.
She is a member of several professional and civic organizations, including the South East Asian Mathematical Society, Mathematical Society of the Philippines, Philippine Amateur Radio Association, and currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Makiling Amateur Radio Society.
