A number of renowned global and Asian experts on food and agriculture will converge on 28-30 August at the AIM Conference Center, Makati City, Philippines for the 6th Asian Society of Agricultural Economists (ASAE) International Conference titled “The Asian Economic Renaissance: What’s in It for Agriculture?”
Dr. Arsenio M. Balisacan , SEARCA Director and concurrent ASAE Vice President, will open the said conference. The opening ceremony will also include the Presidential Address and Secretary’s Report to be given by Dr. Jamalludin Bin Sulaiman, ASAE President and Dr. Ki Whan Chung, ASAE Secretary General, respectively. Some of the paper presenters for the plenary session include: - Professor Peter Timmer (Stanford University and Center for Global Development, US), “International Best Practice in Food Policy”;
- Professor Keijiro Otsuka (Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development, Japan, and Former Chair of the IRRI Board of Trustees), “Agricultural Growth and Poverty Reduction in Rural Areas of Asia”;
- Dr. Mark Rosegrant (International Food Policy Research Institute), “Climate Change and Asian Agriculture”;
- Dr. Prabhu Pingali (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), “The Green Revolution Forty Years Later: Lessons Learned and Unfinished Business”;
- Professor James Roumasset (University of Hawaii), “Rethinking Agricultural Development: New Challenges and Issues in Rural Poverty Reduction”;
- Professor Jikun Huang (Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy, Beijing), “Prospects of Chinese Agriculture and the Implications of the Chinese Economic Miracle to Asian Agriculture”; and
- Dr. Shabd Acharya (Institute of Development Studies, India), “Indian Agriculture and Food Security: Current Concerns and Lessons.”
Aside from these, the three-day conference will also feature several parallel sessions covering a wide array of topics such as food supply and demand outlook, globalization and food security, changing agricultural food markets, energy and food, rural renewable energy development, agricultural biotechnology, and pathways out of rural poverty.
Organized by ASAE, in collaboration with SEARCA and the Philippine Agricultural Economics and Development Association (PAEDA), the conference aims to provide a venue for sharing experiences, exchanging perspectives, and discussing emerging issues and challenges of the Asian economic miracle on agriculture and rural development, food security, and poverty reduction.
Launched in 1991, ASAE is an association of agricultural economists and other professionals with special interest on agricultural economic issues and affairs.
Every three years, it conducts the ASAE International Conference participated in by agricultural economists, development practitioners, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and students from all over the world.
